The Automotive Distributors Association (ODD) disclosed that sales of cars and light commercial vehicles in Turkey were 80,141 units in November 2020, an increase of 37.8% on the figure for the same month of the previous year. Sales of cars increased 34.6% to 64,357 units, and sales of light commercial vehicles increased 52.2% to 15,784 units in November 2020 compared with the same month of the previous year.
These continued improved sales figures come as a surprise considering that state banks have discontinued their attractive loan packages first initiated in June, that higher Special Consumption Tax rates were introduced at the end of August for larger models, and that the pandemic and economic recession show no signs of relenting. However, there has been a fall in the increase in sales in November compared with previous months.
In the first eleven months of 2020, sales of cars and light commercial vehicles in Turkey were 668,495 units, 72% higher than the figure for the same period of the previous year. Sales of cars increased 67.3% to 529,388 units, and sales of light commercial vehicles increased 92.8% to 139,107 units.
In the first eleven months of 2020, sales of diesel automobiles were 40.4% and sales of automatic gearbox automobiles were 70.5%. Of commercial vehicle sales, 106,406 (76.5%) vans, 15,869 (11.4%) light trucks, 7,005 (5%) minibuses, and 9,827 (7.1%) pick-up trucks were sold.
In the year 2019, sales of cars and light commercial vehicles in Turkey were 479,060 units, 22.9% lower than the figure for the previous year.
