Automotive sales in Turkey are 78.1% higher in first 10 months of 2020

The Automotive Distributors Association (ODD) disclosed that sales of cars and light commercial vehicles in Turkey were 94,733 units in October 2020, an increase of 93% on the figure for the same month of the previous year. Sales of cars increased 90.9% to 76,341 units, and sales of light commercial vehicles increased 102.6% to 18,392 units in October 2020 compared with the same month of the previous year.

These continued improved sales figures come as a surprise considering that state banks have discontinued their attractive loan packages first initiated in June, that higher Special Consumption Tax rates were introduced at the end of August for larger models, and that the pandemic and economic recession show no signs of relenting.

In the first ten months of 2020, sales of cars and light commercial vehicles in Turkey were 588,354 units, 78.1% higher than the figure for the same period of the previous year. Sales of cars increased 73.1% to 465,031 units, and sales of light commercial vehicles increased 99.7% to 123,323 units.

In the first ten months of 2020, sales of diesel automobiles were 40.8% and sales of automatic gearbox automobiles were 69.9%. Of commercial vehicle sales, 94,304 (76.5%) vans, 13,849 (11.2%) light trucks, 6,421 (5.2%) minibuses, and 8,749 (7.1%) pick-up trucks were sold.

In the year 2019, sales of cars and light commercial vehicles in Turkey were 479,060 units, 22.9% lower than the figure for the previous year. Sales of cars decreased 20.4% to 387,256 units, and sales of light commercial vehicles decreased 31.8% to 91,804 units. Sales in 2019 of diesel automobiles were 52% and sales of automatic gearbox automobiles were 66.5%. Of commercial vehicle sales, 66,704 (72.7%) vans, 10,838 (11.8%) light trucks, 7,203 (7.8%) minibuses, and 7,059 (7.7%) pick-up trucks were sold.
